History of Xi Mu Omega Chapter

Xi Mu Omega has a brief but vivid history. The organization of the chapter was due to the foresight of a group of dedicated Alpha Kappa Alpha women who were interested in providing service to the people in their immediate community.

In March of 1982, ten Alpha Kappa Alpha women who were active in a chapter located 30 miles away from home, decided that the services they were providing away from home could be of benefit to the community in which they had lived.  So on the 3rd Sunday in March 1982, they met, elected officers, and made plans to get a chapter chartered in Columbia. This group decided to name itself Alpha Rose. These ladies toiled with devotion and untiring patience to make Xi Mu Omega a reality.

Mrs. Irene Thomas and Mrs. Carrie James provided leadership in getting inactive Sorority Members to join in the effort of getting the chapter chartered. Contact was made with the Regional Director, who came to Hattiesburg to outline the steps for the group to follow. After many meetings, filling out forms, reactivating Sorority Members far and near, the criteria for a graduate chapter was met.

The big day came June 27, 1982 at the Marion County Activity Center in Columbia, MS. Twenty beautifully smiling Alpha Kappa Alpha women came together to share an experience that cannot be explained, but can only be felt and remembered in the hearts of those who attended.

They began the day at 9:00 a.m. with a very inspiring and heartwarming chartering ceremony conducted by our Regional Director, Mrs. Johnella Martin.  All Sorority Members present were touched by the beauty and splendor of this ceremony.
